Growing Pains in Children

Growing pains in children can be distressing for the child and their parents. These growing pains are a cramp like sensation that occurs in the upper calf muscles of active children at night. It will wake the child from sleep. These night pains can cause concern, but a true growing pains in children, by definition is not a serious problem and is self-limiting. The reason that growing pain in children is potentially serious is that there are some potentially serious conditions that can have symptoms similar to the traditional growing pains. The treatment for these growing pains in children is reassurance of the child, gentle massage and stretching before bed.
