Leg Length Differences

by admin on March 29, 2012

Leg length differences are important in the management of athlete, especially those who participate in unidirectional sports like running. The reason that leg length differences are important is the asymmetries that they create. The analogy is like driving and care and the ‘wear and tear’ that an imbalance between the wheels will cause. More often than not, the leg length difference is so subtle that it is not easily detectable. The reliability of measuring the differences is a problem and decision on how much of a leg length difference is clinical important is one that has not been resolved. Some believe than a few millimetres is significant, but others believe that the body can adapt to anything up to a few centimetres.  The best advice for a leg length difference is to err on the side of caution and perhaps under treat the problem. There are many ways that the body can compensate for a leg length difference. The most common compensation is to use a more flexed knee.
