Obesity is becoming a significant public health issue with substantial impacts on the individual in terms of morbidity and to society in the health care costs. The discipline of sports medicine plays a significant role in managing people with obesity via the use of sports and physical activities. The extra weight carried by obesity puts the tissues under even more stress when an exercise program is undertaken and this will need to be managed by a sports medicine professional. Obesity also increases the risk for a number of medical problems such as hypertension and diabetes which will also need the input of a sports medicine doctor if an exercise program is undertaken. Those with obesity need to be encouraged to exercise and this needs to be done in the context of the increased risk for problems that may occur.
