Running cadence is how many steps the runners takes per minute. To run faster, you need to take more. If you stride length is shorter your running cadence will have to be faster if you want to run as fast as someone who has a longer stride length. There is a lot of discussion and debate as to what is the ideal running cadence should be. A lot of that focuses on a cadence of 180 steps/min as being ideal to prevent injury. There is not data on that, but a lot of opinion and testimonials. There is no doubt that some runners do decrease their injury risk by changing their running cadence. Certainly more research is needed into the concept to see if it is worth pursing and more importantly, changing.
