Running shoes are a hot topic at the moment and the role that they may or may not play in running overuse injury and also in the context about the debate on barefoot running. The evidence for running shoes is limited, but that lack of evidence does not meant that there is anything wrong with them. The cause of overuse injury is multifactorial and it can be easy to blame a running shoe as an easy target rather than other not so obvious factors. There are so many different brands of running shoes on the market and so many different models within each brand the choice of shoe can be difficult. This means that it is easy to get the wrong running shoe. The wrong choice can have adverse consequences, just as the right choice can be protective from injury and enhance performance. There is some debate about if running shoes can or can mot affect the strength of the muscles, but it appears that they don’t.
