Sports medicine means different thing to different people. To many, sports medicine means the doctors and athletic trainers that rush onto the field to look after the injured elite athlete. There is much more to sports medicine than just that. Yes, sports medicine is about looking after the athlete with an injury, but it is also so much more. Sports medicine is about using medicine to increase an athlete’s performance (legally!). There are specialists in many health disciplines that deal with athlete from family practice to orthopaedics to podiatry to nutrition to physical therapy to dentistry. Sports medicine is also the use of sport in medicine. For example, the use of aerobic exercise to rehabilitate those with cardiac problems.
